HOW TO BECOME A REFEREE
Would you like to become a referee? Being a part of Wallan Basketball is a wonderful way to create relationships, develop life skills, give back to your community and, for parents, it is an opportunity to show support for your children.

Becoming a referee can be a rewarding and challenging experience and is a great way to develop confidence and fitness whilst being an excellent source of income. Refereeing is also flexible in nature so can be done at varying times to suit the individual.

Basketball Victoria require referees to be at least 12 years of age, however due to the limited lower aged competitions we have, we recommend that referees be at least 14 years of age.

Beginner's courses may vary in their methods and durations of presentations, but generally a course will run for between 12 to 16 hours, which includes practical sessions. The theory component usually takes 12 hours and the practical component 4 hours and is carried out during the junior domestic program on a Saturday.

On completion of the course the official will be graded as a “trainee” or “apprentice” referee and will work with a master or mentor until assessed as having all the competencies of a Level C Referee. Once a C grade referee, you then follow the pathways of accreditation, which include:
-
Level C, B, A (association level),
-
Level 1, 2 and 3 (state level),
-
Level 4, (national level)
-
Level 5, (FIBA International)
