OUR COACHING PHILOSOPHY

At Wallan Basketball, coaching isn’t just about strategy—it’s about shaping players and creating an environment where they thrive. Our core philosophies underpin everything we do:

Improvement – Constant growth for players and teams.

Enjoyment – Fostering a love for the game.
Team First – Building unity on and off the court.

WHY COACH AT WALLAN?
As a coach, you’ll:
  • Inspire players to improve and enjoy the game.

  • Encourage teamwork and sportsmanship.

  • Represent Wallan Basketball with pride and integrity.

REFEREES

Referees are the backbone of basketball, ensuring fair play and keeping the game running smoothly. Every game, from local matches to elite competitions, relies on skilled officials to make it happen. Wallan Basketball is committed to developing a strong referee program and is always looking for passionate individuals to join our team.

WhY BECOME A REFEREE?

Becoming a referee is a fantastic opportunity to:

  • Build relationships within the Wallan Basketball community.

  • Develop life skills such as confidence, leadership, and decision-making.

  • Stay active and improve fitness.

  • Earn a flexible and rewarding income.

  • Support your children’s involvement in basketball as a parent

Refereeing is open to individuals aged 12 and older, though we recommend starting at age 14 due to limited opportunities in lower-aged competitions.

WHAT DOES TRAINING INVOLVE?

Wallan Basketball offers comprehensive training for aspiring referees:

  • Beginner’s Course: Typically 12–16 hours, including 12 hours of theory and 4 hours of practical training during our Saturday junior domestic program.

  • Mentorship: After completing the course, new referees begin as "trainees" or "apprentices" and work with mentors until they achieve a Level C accreditation.

PATHWAYS FOR GROWTH

Referees can progress through various levels of accreditation:

Association Level: Level C, B, A

State Level: Levels 1, 2, and 3

National Level: Level 4

International Level: Level 5 (FIBA)

Whether you’re looking for a rewarding challenge, a chance to give back, or a stepping stone to higher-level officiating, the Wallan Panthers Referee Program is the place to start.

SCORE TABLE

Scorers play a crucial role in every basketball game. While scoring might seem daunting at first, it’s easier than you think—and we’re here to help!

LEARN TO SCORE

Get started by exploring:

  • iPad Scoring: A simple system used at Wallan Basketball. Watch the video HERE to see how it works.

  • FIBA Scoresheet: A backup paper system used at some venues or when technology isn’t available.

We encourage all players and families to familiarise themselves with both systems so you’re ready to score when needed.

TAKE IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Love scoring? Take the next step by completing a scoring course and earning accreditation through the Victorian Basketball Scoretable Association. With accreditation, you can:

  • Score CBL and Big V games in Wallan.

  • Progress to higher levels of representative basketball.
